A competency assessment focuses on how well an employee is performing the required job skills in relation to specified performance standards. This approach identifies existing competencies and skills gaps of your current and potential employees.

Examples of competency assessment tools include those used pre-employment to evaluate candidate competency in relevant skills; during employment as a part of a periodic performance evaluation; or when considering an employee for a transfer to a new role or department within the organization.

A competency-based assessment refers to any tool that is used to measure the observable behaviors that successful performers demonstrate while working on any given job. These behaviors are the result of various abilities, knowledge, motivations, traits and skills an employee may possess.

What is a competency or skills assessment? A competency assessment focuses on how well an employee is performing the required job skills in relation to specified performance standards. This approach identifies existing competencies and skills gaps of your current and potential employees.

There are three primary competency assessment methods: self-assessments, in which the employee evaluates their own level of competency; manager assessments, in which the manager evaluates the employee's competency; and 360-degree assessments, in which the employee is evaluated by managers, peers, and subordinates.

The competency tools can extract the successful performance of the learner through proper demonstration, and clear and tangible actions. Some of the competency-based assessment tools could be interviews, case studies, assessment centers, questionnaires, tests, questionnaires, etc.

Like the show, competency based assessment seeks to determine whether a person can do a task or group of tasks and how well they can do them. It recognises that the most accurate way to determine a person's competence at something is to assess them using their knowledge and skills in an on-the-job situation.
