Check that there are no cracks, holes or obvious signs of wear on the individual components of the undercarriage including all track links, shoes, track rollers, carrier rollers, idlers, segments, and track adjusters. During the inspection, check for any debris that may have lodged in the undercarriage.

Put something with a straight edge from the front idler to the rear idler and measure the distance between the tracks and the straight edge at the midpoint between the two idlers. There should be only a modest amount of sagging of the tracks.

Remember to check: Track shoes. Links. Pins. Bushings. Top rollers. Bottom rollers. Idlers. Sprockets.

What Does Undercarriage Mean? An undercarriage is the supporting framework underneath any vehicle, whether it's an excavator, car or tractor-trailer. Any wheels or tracks get attached or fitted to the undercarriage to help your machine move.

Look for any wetness or signs of oil leaking from the rollers and front idler. A visual inspection will also tell you if the pins and bushings have been turned or need to be turned. If the top half of the bushing is worn, this means the pins and bushing have been turned.
