An underpayment penalty is a fine levied by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) on taxpayers who don't pay enough tax during the year through withholding and/or their estimated taxes, or who pay late.

If you or your spouse earned Missouri source income of $600 or more (other than military pay), you must file a Missouri income tax return by completing Form MO-1040 and Form MO-NRI. Be sure to include a copy of your federal return.

In order to not incur penalties and interest for underpayment of taxes throughout the year, for both Federal and Missouri, you must pay the lesser of (1) 90% of your current year expected income tax liability or (2) 100% of your prior year actual income tax liability.

A Resident of Missouri is an individual that is domiciled in Missouri. If an individual is not domiciled in Missouri but has permanent living arrangements in Missouri and spends more than 183 days in Missouri, they are considered Missouri residents.

While federal tax rates apply to every taxpayer, state income taxes vary by state. Some states have a flat tax rate, marginal tax rate, or don't have any state taxes at all. Missouri levies a personal income tax on residents and nonresidents with Missouri-income. State tax is levied on your income each year.

Purpose of the Form - Use this form to determine whether your income tax was sufficiently paid throughout the year by withholding or by estimated tax payments. If it is not, you may owe a penalty on the underpaid amount. B.

You must begin your Missouri return with your total federal adjusted gross income, even if you have income from a state other than Missouri. Your deductions and exemptions apply to your total income, not just your Missouri source income. For more information, refer to the Resident/Nonresident and Military Status pages.

Regardless of where your income was earned or if you are using Form MO-CR or Form MO-NRI, you must begin the Missouri return with your federal adjusted gross income, as reported on your federal return. Next, apply all allowable deductions and compute the tax on all of your income.
