After taking a spoonful, Sadako said, "It's good." Those were her last words. She ate a second spoonful, then passed away as if drifting to sleep. She had been in the hospital about eight months.

Sadako was two years old, and two kilometres away from the atomic bomb when it was dropped on Hiroshima. Most of Sadako's neighbors died, but Sadako wasn't injured at all, at least not in any way people could see. Up until the time Sadako was in the seventh grade (1955) she was a normal, happy girl.

Mr. Sasaki says that it is in fact time for morning prayers, and the family gathers around their altar shelf. Mr. Sasaki prays that the spirits of their family's ancestors are at peace and gives thanks for all his life's blessings—his thriving barbershop and his beautiful family.

Her mother chastises her, telling her that the day is not for a carnival; it is a day to remember all those who died from the atomic bomb. Sadako's father reminds her about her grandmother, Oba Chan, who died on that tragic day.

After folding her thousandth crane, Sadako made her wish, to be well again. Sadly, Sadako's wish did not come true. She remained ill but did not lose her faith in origami cranes. Sadako began folding more cranes for her father's debt to be forgiven, her new wish.
