Repeated reading consists of students reread- ing a series of passages until they reach a satisfactory level of fluency (Samuels, 1979). Through rereading, students are provided with multiple opportunities to learn passage facts.

Repeated reading is an academic practice that aims to increase oral reading fluency. Repeated reading can be used with students who have developed initial word reading skills but demonstrate inadequate reading fluency for their grade level.

Fluency is important because it builds a bridge between word recognition and comprehension. It allows students time to focus on what the text is saying. They are able to make connections between what they are reading and their own background knowledge. Therefore, they are able to concentrate on comprehension.

The first approach is to reread the same passage orally with guidance. The second approach is to read aloud while listening to a passage on a tape. Other forms of Repeated Reading are Reader's Theatre, choral reading and echo reading.

Use repeated reading as practice for the timed repeated reading. Have students read passages aloud several times while receiving feedback and guidance from an adult. Have the adult or a more proficient student read the passage. Then have the student read the passage.

Repeated reading usually leads to better reading performance. The biggest payoffs tend to be with word reading, but it also has been found to improve oral reading fluency and reading comprehension (the most frequently reported area of improvement).
