The maximum penalty of driving with a suspended or revoked registration is a $100.00 fine and 30 days in jail for the first offense, $200.00 and 90 days in jail for the second offense, and for the third offense the maximum penalty is a $500.00 fine and 180 days in jail.

To clear a suspended registration, a driver must first check with the DMV to figure out the reason for the suspension. Then he/she must resolve the underlying problem. For example, a driver who failed to pay the registration fee can make that payment and then pay the reinstatement fee.

The cost for the conditional license is approximately $75.00; this is in addition to the fee to enroll in the DDP (approximately $225.00). It will cost you an additional $25.00 to return your conditional license to the DMV.

If you were suspended for an insurance lapse, you can submit proof of insurance online. If the vehicle is not insured and the registration is still valid, you must surrender your registration and plates to DMV. If you are required to pay the suspension termination fee, you can pay online.

You must apply for a conditional or restricted use license in person at a DMV office. You can do this at most, but not all, Motor Vehicles offices. Contact your nearest office to find out where you can apply.

If my registration is suspended for a lapse of insurance, can another person register the vehicle? No. The DMV will not issue a new registration if the DMV determines that the purpose of the new registration is to avoid the suspension.

Appeal. If you do not agree with the decision that was made by the hearing judge, you can file an appeal. The appeal must be no more than 60 days after the date of the decision letter or notice. Submit your Appeal from DMV Hearing Determination (pdf) (AA-33A) to the DMV Appeals Board.
