As Low As Reasonably Achievable. ALARA principle. A principle that states that all radiation exposure to humans should be limited to levels that are as low as reasonably achievable.

For a Level 1 investigation, individuals are notified of their exposure and asked to evaluate work practices with the purpose of reducing future exposure.

ALARA stands for “as low as reasonably achievable”. ALARA means avoiding exposure to radiation that does not have a direct benefit to you, even if the dose is small. To do this, you can use three basic protective measures in radiation safety: time, distance, and shielding.

The Cardinal Rules of Radiation protection are time, distance and shielding.

The EDE 2 calculation only can be done when an apron is always worn. The collar badge must be coded as zone 13 (collar).

The ALARA philosophy is based on the assumption that exposure to radiation poses a risk. The cautious assumption that a proportional relationship exists between dose and effect for all doses (non-threshold concept) is the basis for ALARA. There may be some risk associated with any dose.

For reducing radiation exposure, there are 3 principals: time, distance, and shielding.

ALARA REPORTING The ALARA program sets personnel dose levels well below the annual regulatory limits. Doses exceeding these Level 2 will trigger an investigation to determine the cause of the dose and assess methods for dose reduction.

The ICRP system of radiation protection is based on three fundamental principles: justification, optimisation and dose limitation.
