The biggest key is simply staying awake and paying attention in class. Those who regularly fell asleep typically struggled with academics. Those who stayed awake were typically fine. There is a roughly 35% failure rate at OCS overall.

The STA-21 Commissioning Program is designed to meet the goals of the Navy in the 21st Century, while at the same time creating a fair and equitable system for outstanding active duty Sailors to receive a top-notch college education and become commissioned officers.

The training is extremely demanding, both mentally and physically. Upon successful completion of OCS, you will be commissioned as a Navy Officer. During your training period, you will be instructed on leadership, receive physical and military training, and study academics related to the command of ships and submarines.

Age: Applicants must be at least 19 years old and not have passed their 32nd birthday at the time of commissioning. **Prior enlisted service will be considered automatically for year for year age limit adjustment up to age 37. No waivers are available beyond age 37 for individuals with prior enlisted service.

The vast majority of recruits are 18–19 years old and left their parents' home. OCS is both physically and mentally challenging, much more mentally challenging than boot camp.

Officer Candidate School is a 13-week course located at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. Navy OCS prepares you to assume the responsibilities of a naval officer and helps you develop to your fullest potential. It includes academic training, memorization and military and physical fitness training.
