Diving can be divided into two large categories: scuba diving and freediving. While freediving is done at breath-hold, scuba diving requires a breathing apparatus. There are many different types of scuba diving, each defined as either recreational or professional.

Recreational depth limits At the open-water diver level (or equivalent) the depth limit is 60 feet (18 m). At the advanced open-water level the depth limit is 100 feet (30 m). With additional deep-diver training, many agencies set a depth limit of recreational diving at 130 feet (40 m).

Dive Sites Recreational divers can explore underwater worlds that non-divers will never see. Technical divers can see all the sites recreational divers can, but they can go deeper and stay longer. Increased limits open up even more places to explore. However, tec divers use alternate breathing gasses and tons of gear.

Technical diving is a term used to describe all diving methods that exceed the limits imposed on depth and/or immersion time for recreational scuba diving. Technical diving often involves the use of special gas mixtures (rather than compressed air) for breathing.

Each of the dive groups is represented by a number in competition: Forward Dive – 1. Backward Dive – 2. Reverse Dive – 3.

Recreational diving is defined as diving at depths no greater than 130 feet, no decompression is required and the diver always has direct access to the surface (nothing overhead).
