How many months does it take for AJOVY to work?

Most patients who are helped by Ajovy usually respond within a month or sooner of starting treatment. In some studies, patients responded as soon as one week. On average, compared to using a placebo (an inactive treatment), Ajovy can help to reduce your number of migraine headache days by about 1 to 2 days per month.

Ajovy contains fremanezumab, which is a monoclonal antibody. A monoclonal antibody is a kind of drug created from immune system cells. Ajovy helps prevent migraine headaches by halting the activity of certain proteins that trigger migraines.

It may take four weeks or more after treatment before you see a reduction in the frequency of your migraines, and more than one set of injections may be needed.

Ajovy (fremanezumab) works by blocking the effect of a protein, called CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) which is involved in pain transmission, inflammation, and blood vessel dilation and is highly prevalent in the sensory nerves of the head and neck.

AJOVY was proven to reduce monthly migraine days by 50% or more. AJOVY was shown to reduce migraine days, with some seeing results in as early as 1 week.

You can take your dose of Ajovy either as a monthly dosage or a quarterly dosage (once every 3 months). The monthly dosing schedule is a 225-mg injection of Ajovy once per month. The quarterly dosing schedule is three 225-mg injections given one after another for a total of 675 mg.

Weight gain has not been reported as a side effect of Ajovy in clinical studies conducted by the manufacturer. Some anecdotal reports from patients and doctors do describe weight gain as a side effect with CGRP inhibitors.
