What is a Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise? A Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise is a concise, validated method of assessment consisting of a supervisor observing a trainee during a consultation with a real patient and providing feedback to the trainee about their performance.

Mini-CEX and CBDs follow a similar format; the difference is that a CBD would be more of a discussion. Here is an example of a mini-CEX, yours doesn't need to be this long! The “Title” allows the reader to immediately know the focus of what you have done.

Trainees should organise mini-CEX assessments with a range of trainers....Skills assessed using the mini-CEX History-taking. Clinical examination. Formulating management plans. Communicating with patients. Professional and interpersonal skills.

The mini-clinical evaluation exercise (mini-CEX) is a formative assessment tool designed to provide feedback on skills essential to good medical care by observing an actual clinical encounter.

The four components of the Mini-CEX evaluation are: Medical Interviewing Skills, Physical Examination Skills, Professionalism/Communication Skills, Clinical Reasoning & Judgment.

In the Mini-CEX, the trainee is evaluated regarding history taking, physical examination skills, communication skills, clinical judgment, professionalism, organization/efficiency, and overall clinical care [5]. In the DOPS, the focus lies on procedural skills.

For mini-CEX, ACAT and CBDs assessors can be any doctor with appropriate experience beyond CMT/IMT level (SpR/ ST3 grade and above). For DOPS assessors can be anyone with expertise in the procedure, including experienced nurses and allied health professionals as appropriate.
