Words Their Way Classroom carefully aligns instruction with the five developmental stages of spelling: Emergent-Early Letter Name, Letter Name, Within Word Pattern, Syllables and Affixes, and Derivational Relations.

Words Their Way enables teachers to assess, clearly identify and document each student's spelling stage, group students with common needs and tailor activities to improve students' spelling knowledge.

Score the words by checking off the features spelled correctly that are listed in the cells to the right of each word. For example, if a student spells bed as BAD, he gets a check in the initial b cell and the final d cell, but not for the short vowel.

The Primary Spelling Inventory (PSI) is generally used in kindergarten through third grade. The 26 words are ordered by difficulty to sample features of the letter name- alphabetic to within word pattern stages. Call out enough words so that you have at least five or six misspelled words to analyze.

Directions: Call out each word and give a sentence for meaning. Have the child say each word and then spell it on paper in a numbered column. Stop the test when the child is missing more than half of the words in the list. The highest level with 50% spelled correctly is the child's approximate Grade Level for spelling.
