Is AMC 8 or MATHCOUNTS harder?

The AMC 8 is the hardest of the three math competitions on this list. Many consider Math Olympiad and Mathcounts to be good preparation for the AMC 8.

A national program that provides students in grade 6-8 the opportunity to compete in live contests against and alongside their peers.

Practice previous year competitions. Study one level up. For example, in order to do well in school level you should be practicing all the chapter level competitions; for chapter level you should practice state level competitions; for state levels practice national level competitions; and so on.

The TARGET ROUND (approximately 30 minutes) consists of eight problems presented to competitors in four pairs (6 minutes per pair). This round features multi-step problems that engage students in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving processes. Problems assume the use of calculators.

There are 4 levels in the MATHCOUNTS Competition Series: school, chapter (local), state and national. Competition questions are written for students in grades 6-8. The competitions can be quite challenging, particularly for students who have not been coached using MATHCOUNTS materials.

Each level of competition is comprised of 4 rounds—Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown Round. Altogether the rounds are designed to take about 3 hours to complete.

Coaches and students should view an individual written competition score of 23 (out of a possible 46) as highly commendable. The individual score is the sum of the number of Sprint Round questions answered correctly and twice the number of Target Round questions answered correctly.
