Patch test: Your doctor could put an allergen on a patch and then stick that on your arm or back. Plan for an hour-long appointment. The pricking part of scratch and intradermal tests takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Then you'll wait about 15 minutes to see how your skin reacts.

Patch testing is used to detect allergic contact dermatitis (type IV hypersensitivity reaction). This includes allergy to hair dye, shoes, active ingredients, preservative and fragrances in sunscreens, cosmetics and medicaments.

Why are they so important? If a client complained after their skin reacted to a treatment with you, you'd be at risk of paying damages but only if the client could prove you'd been negligent. Giving them a patch test means your insurance can protect you against big claims landing on your lap.

Positive reactions range from mild redness with a little swelling to bright red, blistered skin, as seen below. What happens if I am not allergic to any of the tested substances? Negative results are common (~25%). Patch testing helps to narrow the potential allergens that are causing your reaction.

Most dermatologists use the TRUE Test, which is a very good screening tool but is limited to testing 28 chemicals. At Barba Dermatology we offer an expanded patch testing for what is called the North American Series of Allergens, which include up to 70 allergens known to cause skin rashes in North America.

A patch test may take several days or more to produce results. A positive skin test means that you may be allergic to a particular substance. Bigger wheals usually indicate a greater degree of sensitivity. A negative skin test means that you probably aren't allergic to a particular allergen.
