Scoring system for the Dizziness Assessment Rating Scale (DARS) Score: 0 = none; 1 = very mild; 2 = mild; 3 = mild to moderate; 4 = moderate; 5 = moderate to severe; 6 = severe.

Dizziness can be diagnosed as Unilateral Vestibular Hypofunction (UVH) if the total score lies between 1 and 4. Scores from 5 to 19 are interpreted as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), while if the score is 20 or higher, it can be interpreted as a Centrally Mediated problem.

The measure is calculated by summing the scores from each of the 25 questions. Physical subdomain (28 points), Emotional subdomain (36 points), and Functional subdomain (36 points) scores are also calculated. Higher point totals indicate a higher impact of dizziness on the individual.

Item scores are summed. There is a maximum score of 100 (28 points for physical, 36 points for emotional and 36 points for functional) and a minimum score of 0. The higher the score, the greater the perceived handicap due to dizziness.

Questionnaire measures The Situational Vertigo Questionnaire (adapted from Jacob et al., 1989) yields a normalized score of 0–4 summing the severity of symptoms induced by disorienting environments, especially those with visual–vestibular conflict.

DHI Score is a useful tool for the prediction of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Correct diagnosis of BPPV is 16 times greater if the DHI Score is greater than or equal to 50.

More often, each subjective sensation of dizziness can be identified more precisely as one of four types of dizziness: vertigo, disequilibrium, presyncope, or lightheadedness.

The test-retest reliability for the scales was good to fair (k=0.63 for the DHI and k=0.25 for the ABC). All patients who completed the DHI and ABC found the questions adequate. The study concluded that the test-retest reliability for both the DHI and the ABC was good.
