One look at the requirements, and you'll see why Invention was the least-earned merit badge in the history of the BSA. To earn it, Scouts had to “invent and patent some useful article” and “show a working drawing or model of the same.” Obtaining a patent is a time-consuming, costly endeavor.

Fingerprinting is one form of biometrics, a science which uses people's physical or biological characteristics to identify them. No two people have the same fingerprints, not even identical twins.

A fingerprint is a trace of a human finger left on a surface. Human fingers have small structures on them (like mountains and valleys). These structures are unique in every human; they can be used as means of identification. There are many different ways to take fingerprints.

Requirements for the Fingerprinting merit badge: Name the surfaces of the body where friction or papillary ridges are found. Name the two basic principles supporting the science of fingerprints and give a brief explanation of each principle. Explain what it takes to positively identify a person using fingerprints.

In earning the Fingerprinting badge, Scouts will learn about and use an important technique that is used by law enforcement officers, along with other materials like matching dental records and DNA sampling, to help identify amnesia victims, missing persons, abducted children, and others.

Scouts learn about the history and uses of fingerprinting while doing the requirement for the Fingerprinting merit badge. They learn to take a set of prints and explore identification methods and patterns. Fingerprinting is an elective merit badge.
