A layer at the bottom of a planter aids in drainage of excess water. Rocks, stones or broken pieces of an old flower pot work well as the drainage layer. The material keeps the plant's roots higher in case excess water builds up at the bottom of the planter.

Sand. Sand is one of the main properties of any type of soil. The grains do not retain or hold onto water, so they are perfect for use in the bottom of indoor planters to aid in drainage.

Make sure your wooden planter has drainage holes, so plants don't become waterlogged. However, if positioning your planter in full sun, you may consider lining the inside of the planter with pieces of old compost bag, to keep the compost moist and reduce the need for regular watering.

For small to medium planters (4” – 12” in diameter) it's good to drill a couple of holes that are no larger than ½ of an inch. For larger planters, 16” and up, drill a couple of holes that are at least an inch in diameter.

If you don't have a drainage hole in your pot, you probably shouldn't use it for an outdoor plant, unless the plant will be sheltered from rain. You need to micromanage the amount of water going into your pot; if it get's drenched in a downpour, all could be lost. More soil means more moisture for longer.

The short answer is yes, planter boxes should have drain holes. Proper drainage is critical to growing healthy plants, because the roots need access to air. Plants sitting in stagnant water have a high chance of developing root rot, which is a serious and often lethal condition for plants.

In fact, some of the most stylish planters do not have drainage holes, as they sit atop sleek wooden stands (and this would be a big mess if there were a drainage hole!). Our Mid-Century planters, for example, do not have drainage holes and are designed to sit directly on wooden stands or other surfaces.

Here are a few natural materials to put in the bottom of your planter to aid drainage: Pine cones & acorns. Chips of wood. Broken sticks. Leaves. River rocks. Tree bark.
