How is the modern periodic table organized? In the modern periodic table, elements are arranged by increasing atomic number (number of protons). Properties of elements repeat in a predictable way when atomic numbers are used to arrange elements into groups.

The periodic table is organized into groups (vertical columns), periods (horizontal rows), and families (groups of elements that are similar). Elements in the same group have the same number of valence electrons. Meanwhile, elements in the same period have the same number of occupied electron shells.

In the periodic table, the elements are arranged in horizontal rows called periods (numbered in blue) and vertically into columns called groups. These groups are numbered by two, somewhat conflicting, schemes.

5 – Periodic Law. This chapter covers the history of the periodic table, and addresses the patterns and trends that occur, such as atomic radii, ionization energy, electron affinity, valency, and electronegativity.

A modern periodic table arranges the elements in increasing order of their atomic numbers and groups atoms with similar properties in the same vertical column (Figure 3.2. 2). Each box represents an element and contains its atomic number, symbol, average atomic mass, and (sometimes) name.
