Intermodal containers are large, rectangular boxes that look a lot like truck trailers, except they don't have wheels. Containers can be transferred between ships, trains and trucks without unloading or reloading the cargo. When they travel by rail, they are loaded onto well cars.

For example, you can have a bus that travels between two cities and then take a train from one city to the other. The train service is an example of intermodal transportation. It uses three modes of transport: trains, buses, and cars. The train service combines buses from one city with trains from another city.

The term “intermodal equipment” refers to trailing equipment (mainly Intermodal containers, chassis but can also include trailers) used in the transportation of cargo by highway in interstate commerce.

Intermodal shipping refers to moving freight by two or more modes of transportation. By loading cargo into intermodal containers, shipments can move seamlessly between trucks, trains and cargo ships. Intermodal shipments typically fall into one of two categories: international intermodal or domestic intermodal.

Intermodal falls into four general categories: Truck, rail, sea, and air. Trucks can easily transport steel freight containers. They are usually the first mode of transportation that intermodal shipping relies on and uses to get the process underway.
