The Regensburg Insomnia Rating Scale (RIS) is a 10-item rating scale to assess the cognitive, behavioural, and emotional aspects of psychophysiological insomnia (PI; Crönlein et al., 2013). The scale has been validated in an adult population.

There is no set number of hours of sleep that qualifies someone as having insomnia because each person has different sleep needs. Generally, adults are recommended to get 7 hours of sleep each night.

ISI. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) is a seven item scale measuring insomnia symptoms with scores ranging between 0 and 28 points. The scale has previously been shown reliable and sensitive to change [7,16].

The Pediatric Insomnia Severity Index (PISI) The PISI is a 6-item parent-proxy measure designed to monitor primary clinical symptoms of paediatric insomnia for children 4–10 years old, which was developed in the USA.

There aren't any tests that can diagnose insomnia directly. Instead, tests help rule out other conditions with similar symptoms to insomnia. The most likely tests include: Sleep apnea testing involving an overnight sleep study in a sleep lab (polysomnography) or an at-home sleep apnea screening device.

The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) is a seven-item self-report questionnaire used to assess the severity of the insomnia disorder (score 8-14 is mild and 15 or more moderate to severe insomnia), impact on daily life and treatment response.

A 5-point Likert scale is used to rate each item (e.g., 0 = no problem; 4 = very severe problem), yielding a total score ranging from 0 to 28. The total score is interpreted as follows: absence of insomnia (0–7); sub-threshold insomnia (8–14); moderate insomnia (15–21); and severe insomnia (22–28).
