A beef cow leasing or sharing agreement allows the two business partners to share the production costs and, in turn, the cow herd's income.

The livestock industry is a great investment because it provides a number of products that are in high demand. The global population is growing, which means that the demand for animal-based products will continue to grow as well.

General Rules of Thumb The general rule of thumb is 1:1. That means one cow per one acre of pasture. Keep in mind that is a minimum requirement. A cow/calf pair will typically require closer to two acres.

If you decided to graze your 100 head of 1400-pound cows for only 2 months, you could graze your cows on 280 acres.

“You want at least an acre per cow,” Robbins said. “If they're going to have a baby, you want two acres for a cow-calf pair. That's the minimum amount of land.” For cows, the quality of the land — specifically, the foraging material on it — matters just as much as the amount of land.

A cattle share lease is one way to reduce an operator's capital needs. Typically, these leases provide the person caring for the cattle (operator) and the cow herd owner with a share of the revenue from the calf-crop sale in proportion to the expenses each person contributes.

Cows can indeed be kept on small plots—an acre or two—but they must be fed. We used to own a home with a two-acre pasture on which we kept three bovines (cow/calf and yearling steer). We needed to supplement their feed about nine months out of the year.

Calves need to be stocked at 1 to 1.5 acres per calf during the fall but can be stocked at 2 to 3 calves per acre during the spring. Gain per acre was found to range from 400 to 900 pounds and profits averaged $88/acre.

But just because you only have a one-acre field shouldn't preclude you from getting cows. However, you will need to purchase hay to feed them because one acre is not enough land to support anything bovine. Cows can indeed be kept on small plots—an acre or two—but they must be fed.
