Maryland law requires that you must return your license plates and get an MVA receipt before you cancel your vehicle or trailers insurance. A fine of $150 for the first month and $7 per day may be imposed until the issue is resolved. And, under certain circumstances you may be eligible for a partial refund.

You must complete the Temporary Inspection Waiver (form VR-129). The fee for a temporary registration is $20. Once your vehicle has been safety inspected, you may apply for your one or two year registration plates. You will need to bring the following documents to the registration section of any full service office.

Customers can get their duplicate registration card free at the time of their online renewal. Duplicate registration cards may also be secured if your registration card has been lost, stolen or defaced. No fees are required for a duplicate registration card secured online through PennDOT's publicly accessible website.

If your original title has been lost or destroyed, you will need to request a duplicate title At the Maryland MVA, you can obtain a duplicate title but it can take 7-10 business days to receive it.

The family member needs the title, a certified copy of the death certificate or the letter (form VR-278 or VR-264P) sent by the MVA notifying the surviving vehicle owner that the title must be transferred to remove the deceased owners name.

You can also apply online to obtain a duplicate registration.
