This is rarer than the previous examples, but sometimes you need to describe an age group in a range. In order to make your writing easy to read and understand, keep long hyphenated noun phrases to a minimum. Instead of, for example, “20-to-45-year-olds,” consider simplifying the phrase to “people ages 20 to 45.”

APA style is very precise about these. Mean and Standard Deviation are most clearly presented in parentheses: The sample as a whole was relatively young (M = 19.22, SD = 3.45). The average age of students was 19.22 years (SD = 3.45).

When writing about age, exact ages or age ranges (e.g., 15–18 years old, 65–80 years old) are more specific than broad categories (e.g., under 18 years old, over 65 years old). Also include the age mean and median in addition to the range of ages to increase the specificity of the reporting.

*The National Institute on Aging's guidance considers 65 and older an older adult, but understandings and definitions about this age range vary by source. When an official or organization uses one of these terms, ask for specifics.
