What is considered LVH in Echo?

ing to the American Society of Echocardiography and/European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging, LVH is defined as an increased left ventricular mass index (LVMI) to greater than 95 g/m in women and increased LVMI to greater than 115 g/m in men.

Women: 4 – 8 mm. Men: 5 – 9 mm.

Left ventricular hypertrophy is a thickening of the wall of the heart's main pumping chamber. This thickening may result in elevation of pressure within the heart and sometimes poor pumping action. The most common cause is high blood pressure.

LVH severity grading is important for diagnosis, prognosis and guidance of therapy. Three main parameters including wall thickness, left ventricular mass, and left ventricular geometry, are easily assessed with echocardiography, CT or CMR.

Electrocardiographic LVH (ECG-LVH) was defined by Sokolow-Lyon (SL), Cornell and Cornell Product (CP) criteria. ECHO-LVH was defined by LVM/BSA≥125 g/m2 in male or ≥110 g/m2 in female (LVH1); LVM/BSA≥115 g/m2 in male, or ≥95 g/m2 in female (LVH2) and LVM/height2.7 ≥51 g/m2.7 in male or ≥47 g/m2.7 in female (LVH3).

Definitions. Mild left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) was diagnosed as left ventricular wall diameter > 11 mm, but not exceeding 15 mm [1,2]. Arterial hypertension was defined as mean 24 h systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 130 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 80 mmHg on ABPM [3].

ECG changes seen in left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH). The electrical vector of the left ventricle is enhanced in LVH, which results in large R-waves in left-sided leads (V5, V6, aVL and I) and deep S-waves in right-sided chest leads (V1, V2).
