What are automatic thoughts? As you may have guessed, automatic thoughts are the kind of negative self-talk that appears immediately, without us even being aware of forming a thought, in response to a certain stimulus. They're often irrational and negative for our mental well-being.

Automatic Thoughts (and Images): List thoughts and images that pop up in relation to the situation. These thoughts can be so automatic that we don't even know we're thinking them. You can start by trying to remember what was going on in your mind right before your mood shifted.

Negative automatic thoughts are negative thoughts that come automatically to us when we are feeling anxious, depressed, angry, frustrated; they can come any time we have a negative emotion. There are different types of negative automatic thoughts. Worry is related to fear that something bad might happen in the future.

Automatic Thinking: An instinctive, unconscious, highly efficient mental process that we have no control over or awareness of. It helps us automate our thought patterns and behavior. It is more accurate in areas where we have acquired significant information already.

These thoughts do not fall under your conscious control. Instead, they operate at a more immediate, unconscious level. Automatic thoughts may be positive and act as a support for sound mental health. However, they may also have a negative impact on your mental health.

Thought records are tools used by cognitive behavioral therapists to help their patients capture, evaluate, and restructure their negative automatic thoughts. Recording and evaluating thoughts allows us to test the accuracy of our thinking, and oftentimes feel better by identifying and correcting bias or inaccuracies.

For example, we may text a friend and not receive a response right away. The automatic thoughts pop into our head saying, “She must not even like me. She's totally ignoring me right now, I know it. She'll never text me back.

The first step: identify the key thoughts that occur alongside your emotional pain. We call these automatic thoughts (ATs) because they just “pop up” in your mind without any effort or deliberation. ATs are usually brief, concise, negative thoughts that seem plausible.
