How common is chlamydia? Chlamydia is the most frequently reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection in the United States. In 2018, 1,758,668 cases of chlamydia were reported to CDC from 50 states and the District of Columbia,3 but an estimated 2.86 million infections occur annually.

Of these 8 infections, 4 are currently curable: syphilis, gonorrhoea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis. The other 4 are viral infections which are incurable: hepatitis B, herpes simplex virus (HSV or herpes), HIV, and human papillomavirus (HPV).

Anyone you have had sexual contact with in the past few months should be informed, Your doctor or nurse will advise you. Whilst many people want to tell their current partner personally, they may be less keen to contact previous partners, especially if they parted on less than friendly terms.

Connecticut has one of the lowest rates of STDs in the country, ranking 42 of the 50 states for the number of chlamydia cases per 100,000, and 41 for gonorrhea and syphilis cases. But in the state's largest cities, the rates are relatively high. Hartford, Bridgeport and New Haven had the highest rates of STDs in 2016.

If you are diagnosed with chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, hepatitis, chancroid, or syphilis, your doctor is supposed to tell the local health department which will then inform the CDC.

States with the highest rate of infection (per 100,000 people): Mississippi (326.7) Alaska (303.7) South Carolina (274.7)

CT, Radiography, and UltrasonographyImaging studies are usually not required for patients with uncomplicated genital chlamydial infections. However, computed tomography (CT) and ultrasonography are useful diagnostic adjuncts in cases of complicated (upper tract) infection.
