Average Duration of Behavior: Sum the total durations and divide by the total occurrences. Example: During a 60 minute observation, David had 3 tantrums that lasted 3 minutes, 7 minutes, and then 5 minutes with a total duration of 15 minutes.

For duration, you can measure the total duration of an entire observation session (for example, the student was out of his seat for 43 minutes in a 60 min window) or duration per occurrence, (such as, the student was out of his seat for an average of 3.07 per minute over fourteen instances).

Latency recording is a different type of duration recording that involves an observer measuring how long it takes for a behavior to begin after a specific verbal demand or event has occurred.

A behavior that has a clear beginning and ending can be observed using a duration recording method. Examples of behaviors that may be observed using duration recording include crying, reading a book, writing in class, time spent working on a math assignment, or out of seat behavior.
