Contact support

The sport of wrestling requires close skin-to-skin contact between opponents. This close contact means there is a high possibility of catching or spreading a variety of skin conditions ranging from ringworm, one of the most common, to impetigo and even MRSA.

Tinea aka Ringworm Ringwormis a fungal infection that can be seen anywhere but most commonly affects the skin on the body (tinea corporis), the scalp (tinea capitis), the feet (tinea pedis, or 'athlete's foot'), or the groin (tinea cruris, or 'jock itch').

Tinea corporis - also known as Ring worm. Herpes simplex. Impetigo. Staphylococcus aureus - also known as staph infection/MRSA.

Tinea infections, more commonly known as Ringworm, are the most common skin infections transmitted through wrestling. It is caused by parasitic fungi that survive on keratin, an organic material that is found in skin, hair, and nails.

Contact with a mat generally won't cause an infection as long as the skin is intact. However, a mat burn can be enough to let staph bacteria under the skin, increasing the risk of infection.

Wrestler's rash is a skin infection spread by skin-to-skin contact of a herpes virus. Symptoms can include painful blisters, fever, sore throat, and headache. Athletes who participate in hand-to-hand sports (wrestling, rugby) are more likely to get infected. Maintaining good hygiene can prevent infection.

Conclusions: It is unlikely that wrestling mats are a source of ringworm infections in wrestlers.

Folliculitis, Furuncles, Carbuncles Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles that appears in areas of high friction and perspiration and is caused by a bacteria (most commonly Staphylococcus aureus). Furuncles (boils) and carbuncles (larger boils) are complications of this infection.
