The Department of National Defence (DND; French: Ministère de la Défense nationale) is the department of the Government of Canada which supports the Canadian Armed Forces in its role of defending Canadian national interests domestically and internationally.

Non-commissioned members are skilled trades personnel who work for the Canadian Armed Forces. They provide operational and support services.

Each applicant must provide three references, who are not relatives, who must have known the applicant for the previous five continuous years (or to age 16, whichever comes first).

A valid reference is defined as an adult (18 years of age or older) that knows you well enough to provide a worthwhile, fair and adequate assessment about your personal character. Members of your family or relatives, family friends, friends, neighbours, co-workers or peers are not considered valid references.

Help is also available through the Canadian Forces Member Assistance Program at 1-800-268-7708, 24 hours a day, from anywhere in the world, and receive a confidential referral for mental health support.

While there is no set rule about who should be listed, I generally say to list at least one individual from your chain of command who knows you well and will speak favorably, and honestly, on your behalf. Depending on your employer, this may need to be someone from your most recent assignment.

If you submit your application in early July, chances are that the processing time will be between 7 days and 2 weeks.
