Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV). The virus spreads easily from people with chickenpox to others who have never had the disease or never been vaccinated. If one person has it, up to 90% of the people close to that person who are not immune will also become infected.

Varicella (chickenpox) is an acute infectious disease. It is caused by varicella-zoster virus (VZV), which is a DNA virus that is a member of the herpesvirus group. After the primary infection, VZV stays in the body (in the sensory nerve ganglia) as a latent infection.

Suspected cases or outbreaks of communicable diseases such as chickenpox, measles, pertussis and meningitis must be reported by school or pre-kindergarten personnel to the local health department. Note that some of these diseases must be reported immediately by phone.

Varicella cases should be reported within one working day (Monday through Friday) so that public health interventions may be implemented in a timely manner.
