Form 1099-NEC is not a replacement for Form 1099-MISC. Form 1099-NEC is only replacing the use of Form 1099-MISC for reporting independent contractor payments. And, the 1099-NEC is actually not a new form. It was last used in 1982.

If you don't get a 1099-MISC form, you still must report any money you received for work, royalties or services, whether it's for cutting grass or selling a manuscript. The IRS wants to know about all your income. Set up a spreadsheet or use accounting software to track your earnings throughout the year.

The general rule is that you must issue a Form 1099-MISC to any vendors or sub-contractors you have paid at least $600 in rents, services, prizes and awards, or other income payments in the course of your trade/business in a given tax year (you do not need to issue 1099s for payments made for personal purposes).

The 1099-NEC is now used to report independent contractor income. But the 1099-MISC form is still around, it's just used to report miscellaneous income such as rent or payments to an attorney. Although the 1099-MISC is still in use, contractor payments made in 2020 and beyond will be reported on the new form 1099-NEC.

Reporting Without 1099 Set up a spreadsheet or use accounting software to track your earnings throughout the year. This will be easier than trying to backtrack through your records at tax time. When you file taxes, you'll list your miscellaneous income on a Form 1040 Schedule C, Profit and Loss from Business.

The 1099-R refers to retirement income, while the 1099-MISC is for independent contractors and freelancers who perform a service for someone during the tax year. These are only two of the many varieties of the form that exist, each to report a specific type of income.

You're not required to file Forms 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC with your state.

Filing Taxes Without a 1099 You don't have to file a 1099 with your income tax return, so if you don't have the form, that's not really a problem as long as you report the income and pay the proper amount of tax.

Since the IRS considers any 1099 payment as taxable income, you are required to report your 1099 payment on your tax return. For example, if you earned less than $600 as an independent contractor, the payer does not have to send you a 1099-MISC, but you still have to report the amount as self-employment income.

Despite COVID-19, the Internal Revenue Service is continuing forward with moving 1099-MISC Box 7, Non-Employee Compensation to a new form, the 1099-NEC. ... State tax withheld, payer state ID number and state income is reported in Boxes 5, 6 and 7 on the 1099-NEC. And that's it: Those are the only boxes on the 1099-NEC.
