How Is Contrast Extravasation Treated? If contrast extravasation happens, we will have you raise your arm above the level of your heart and apply a cold compress to the IV site. An ice pack also helps to limit any pain you may have both while you are at the medical center and over the next few days.

Following an imaging exam with contrast material, the material is absorbed by the body or eliminated through urine or bowel movements. There are several types of contrast materials: Iodine-based and barium-sulfate compounds are used in x-ray and computed tomography (CT) imaging exams.

In the hand, the most common causes of compartment syndrome are fractures, crushing and other soft tissue injuries such as burns, arterial injuries, snake bites and infections[10]. Compartment syndromes of the hand or forearm secondary to extravasation of contrast have been reported[6,7,11].

Extravasation is the inadvertent administration of a vesicant solution into surrounding tissue, instead of into the intended vascular pathway. 1 A vesicant is an agent that has the potential to cause blistering or tissue necrosis. 2 Radiologic contrast media are considered to be vesicant solutions.

An extravasation occurs when there is accidental infiltration of a vesicant or chemotherapeutic drug into the surrounding IV site. Vesicants can cause tissue destruction and / or blistering. Irritants can result in pain at the IV site and along the vein and may or may not cause inflammation.

Yearly screening should start at age 40 for patients with an average risk for breast cancer. Women with a gene mutation such as BRCA 1 or BRCA 2, or those with a strong family history of breast cancer, should consult with their physicians but normally we recommend they get their first 3D mammograms at age 30.

A 3D mammogram offers advantages in detecting breast cancer in people with dense breast tissue because the 3D image allows doctors to see beyond areas of density. Breast tissue is composed of milk glands, milk ducts and supportive tissue (dense breast tissue) and fatty tissue.

Ask anyone who has been called back after a mammogram and they'll tell you that news can come with anxiety. It doesn't mean breast cancer has been detected, in fact, the vast majority of callbacks turn out to be normal, but it does mean the radiologist saw something suspicious and needs to take another look.

Some major signs of infiltration and extravasation include: Swelling at or near the IV site. The skin will feel tight and cool to the touch. Some patients experience intense pain or burning while others may just feel slight discomfort. Skin discoloration.
