Weight and balance have a direct effect on the stability and performance of the aircraft. If a plane is too heavy, it may never get off the ground. If it's out of balance, it may be uncontrollable when it does take flight. ... Maintaining proper weight and balance is an extremely important balancing act.

The FAA requires that a current and accurate empty weight and empty weight center of gravity be known for an aircraft. This information must be included in the weight and balance report, which is a part of the aircraft permanent records. The weight and balance report must be in the aircraft when it is being flown.

Determine the weights and arms of all mass within the aircraft. Multiply weights by arms for all mass to calculate moments. Add the moments of all mass together. Divide the total moment by the total weight of the aircraft to give an overall arm.

1-1] The pilot in command of the aircraft has the responsibility on every flight to know the maximum allowable weight of the aircraft and its CG limits. This allows the pilot to determine on the preflight inspection that the aircraft is loaded in such a way that the CG is within the allowable limits.

While there are no specified requirements for a pilot operating under 14 CFR part 91 to conduct weight and balance calculations prior to each flight, 14 CFR part 91, section 91.9 requires the pilot in command (PIC) to comply with the operating limits in the approved AFM.

Ascertain from the pilot's operating handbook the empty weight of the aircraft and determine the weights of people, baggage, and fuel. Multiply each weight by the arm the distance from the reference datum to find the moment. Add all the weights to find the gross weight. Add all the moments to find the total moment.

Two types of scales are typically used to weigh aircraft: those that operate mechanically with balance weights or springs, and those that operate electronically with what are called load cells.
