Generally under Minnesota law, your rights to possess firearms and ammunition are permanently taken away if you have been: convicted or adjudicated delinquent of a felony crime of violence, committed by the court for mental health reasons to a treatment facility, found incompetent to stand trial, or.

No permit is required to purchase or transfer most long guns such as rifles or shotguns. Buyers must go through a background check to purchase a long gun from a federally licensed dealer. No permit is required to own a firearm, but state statute regulates who can own a firearm by listing who is prohibited.

Minnesota law requires a person to hold either a Permit to Purchase, issued by your local Chief Law Enforcement Officer (CLEO), or a Permit to Carry, in order to purchase certain “semi-automatic military-style assault weapons” along with most pistols and some shotguns.
