Generally, processing your IDR application should take no more than two weeks.

Income-based repayment (IBR) is a federal student loan repayment program that adjusts the amount you owe each month based on your income and family size.

You must provide documentation of all taxable income you and your spouse (if applicable) currently receive. Taxable income includes, for example, income from employment, unemployment income, dividend income, interest income, tips, and alimony.

Income-driven repayment (IDR) plans are designed to make your student loan debt more manageable by giving you a monthly payment based on your income and family size. If your outstanding federal student loan debt represents a significant portion of your annual income, an IDR plan might be right for you.

To qualify for IBR, a borrower must demonstrate a “partial financial hardship.” A formula using adjusted gross income (AGI), family size and state of residence will determine how much a borrower is able to pay.

Go to StudentAid.gov/idrapp, scroll down to "Returning IDR Applicants,” and click the "Log in to start" button. You must log in with your FSA ID (account username and password). Select "I am submitting documentation for the annual recertification of my income-driven payment" under reason for request.

You'll need to submit an income-driven repayment application at studentaid.gov or download a paper request form and submit it to your servicer (the company that sends you a bill every month).

IBR can be requested electronically or by submitting this form. The electronic form can be accessed at DWC's website at http://.dir.ca.gov/dwc/IBR.htm. Form Instructions: The requesting provider must complete all fields in the Employee Information, Provider Information, and Claims Administrator Information sections.
