What is the compulsory education law in Georgia?

Compulsory Attendance Georgia law requires that students attend a public or private school or a home study program from their sixth to their 16th birthdays. Public Kindergarten is available in every school system, but it is not mandatory.

Students who accumulate more than ten unexcused absences will be considered truant. The school board will contact the homes of students that are absent from school through the use of an automated notification system. Students will be referred to the school social worker for frequent absences.

Students must be in the classroom by 7:55am each day. They are dismissed at 2:55pm. Please refer to the AM Video and PM Video for more details on car rider drop off and dismissal. Families picking up car riders must display their walker and car rider tags to ensure student safety during dismissal.

Mandatory attendance in a public school, private school, or home school program shall be required for children between their sixth and sixteenth birthdays. Such mandatory attendance shall not be required where the child has successfully completed all requirements for a high school diploma.

Absences over 9 days, whether excused or unexcused, need to be made up. It is the student's responsibility to schedule time with their teachers to make up absences.
