Columns are probably the most recognizable aspect of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Although their primary function is as structural support for buildings, the design of columns in ancient Greece and Rome changed several times through antiquity. There a five different orders or styles of columns.

In the ancient world, columns were used particularly in the peristyles of temples and in colonnades along stoas. Columns could also be incorporated (engaged) within walls or be free-standing and so carry sculptures to commemorate particular events or people.

The term column applies especially to a large round support (the shaft of the column) with a capital and a base or pedestal, which is made of stone, or appearing to be so. A small wooden or metal support is typically called a post. Supports with a rectangular or other non-round section are usually called piers.

The Romans adopted the use of columns from the Greeks. The Greeks used columns to support the structure of their temples and other architecture. However, Romans also used columns as decorations. There are four main types of ancient Roman columns: Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Tuscan.

Think of a column as representing the strength of life, as it points towards the heavens and is usually (next to the image of a weeping woman) one of the most prominent symbols in a memorial / sentimental scene. A strong, proud object, seemingly timeless (eternity) and then you have a broken variation.

Columns are structural elements that transmit loads from a structure's slab (the roof or upper floors) to its foundation and the ground beneath it. Often, they are vertically oriented. Columns are used in construction for trusses, building frames, and bridge structure support.
