The primary function of the initial counseling process is to communicate performance standards to the rated Soldier and let them know what is expected of them. This session will also develop an adequate duty description, responsibilities, and performance objectives.

Perhaps the three main approaches are psychodynamic, humanistic and behavioural. Each of these has a different theory and ideas underpinning it, and the therapists and counsellors using each will approach problems and issues in different ways. These three main approaches each support a number of individual therapies.

A formal Letter of Counseling is normally recorded on an DA Form 4856, Developmental Counseling Form. It provides a record of counseling and is useful for supporting more serious corrective action if needed. It may also be used as a reference when completing performance evaluations.

Initial. counseling will be conducted within 30 days after the beginning of the rating period, and quarterly thereafter, for NCOs, WO1s, chief warrant officers two (CW2s), lieutenants (LTs) (includes first lieutenants (1LTs) and second lieutenants (2LTs)), and captains (CPTs).

Army leaders may employ three major approaches to counseling: nondirective, directive, or combined.

Examples of event-oriented counseling include, but are not limited to instances of superior or substandard performance, reception and integration counseling, crisis counseling, referral counseling, promotion counseling, and separation counseling.
