What is the Bates Numbering index?

Bates numbering, also known as Bates stamping, is a method of sequentially numbering pages. It's especially useful for situations involving a large number of documents, such as indexing medical records, business receipts, or in legal preparation.

The Bates prefix is specified with at least one letter and up to six letters and sequential numbering with seven digits, starting 0000001, unless otherwise instructed at or prior to time of job commencement. The Lexbe eDiscovery Platform (LEP) does not allow Bates Stamping without a prefix.

Bates numbering is a method of sequentially numbering pages with a reference identifier to make them easier to locate and reference. This could be as simple as sequential numbers like “0001” and “0002,” or it may include alphanumeric strings (such as “ABC_0001” and “ABC_0002”).

Use a font with good numerals. Among system fonts, I like Franklin Gothic Medium or Franklin Gothic Demi. Avoid fonts that are condensed or dark on the page (e.g., Arial Black). These fonts are hard to read at small sizes and don't stand up well to scanning or photocopying.

Bates Numbering is a procedure used primarily in legal, medical, and business areas to uniquely identify each page in a set of documents by assigning a series of self-incrementing numbers. The Bates number appears as a header or footer on specified pages (typically and by default on all pages).

To add Bates numbering to one or more PDF documents in Adobe® Acrobat® XI, select "Tools" panel (on the right hand-side of the screen), expand "Pages" section and select "Add Bates Numbering" entry. Select input files and press OK to continue. You should see "Add Header and Footer" operation.

Bates numbers (bates stamps, bates labels) are numbers used to uniquely identify pages within a set of documents. Bates numbers are used in almost all law firms as an agreed-upon method between parties to ensure a common naming convention when referring to given pages.

Then follow these steps to automatically add Bates Numbers to each page in the document set: Open the file. Click Tools. Select Edit PDF. Choose More. Click Bates Numbering and Add. Select Output Options to customize the serial numbers. Click OK.
