What is a citation? It is a written record of something you did wrong while operating your vehicle or while it is parked. “Ticket” is simply a less formal term for a citation. There is no difference between a citation and a ticket. In both cases, this is a written document typically issued by a police officer.

Traffic Citations are commonly known as traffic tickets or moving violations. They are given by police officers during traffic stops. You have 30 days from the date of your citation to pre-pay or request a hearing. If you do not do so, your driver's license may be suspended.

Most traffic violations are misdemeanors and carry a penalty of sixty days in jail and/or a $500 fine. For traffic infractions, penalties never include any jail time. Minor traffic offenses in Maryland are misdemeanors. For example, going 10 miles over the speed limit.

What is a citation? It is a brief statement of the facts of the incident, how the law was violated, and a specific statement of the section of the law that was violated. It also contains instructions on what must be done to respond.

As a rule of thumb, receiving a civil citation in Maryland will not go on your record. In other words, it will not appear on your criminal record. However, civil violations can show up on your driving record. This is important because you may end up paying higher insurance premiums.

​A citation is a form, entitled Maryland Uniform Complaint and Citation, which may be issued to you by a police officer if you violate certain motor vehicle traffic laws. Citations are issued for violations such as speeding and failure to wear a seat belt.
