A plate can also be reassigned from a leasing company to an individual, or from one leasing company to another. A reassignment can only be done for a newly purchased or leased vehicle, and an RMV-1 form must be used. A plate can only be reassigned when a lease is involved. When your registration is canceled, the RMV will provide you with a registration cancellation receipt. Once your registration is canceled, you must recycle or destroy your license plates. Plates can be cut in half and discarded; or you can recycle destroyed plates if your town accepts them at the local recycle center.

Temporary plates are not provided in Massachusetts, so they are not legal. If you are an out-of-state resident and temporary plates are allowed in your state, simply driving through the state of MA with that temporary plate is okay.

The person transferring the vehicle must have met the tax laws of the state they registered it. You must pay a $25 fee and the title and registration fees. The person gifting the vehicle must complete a sales tax exemption form (MVU-24).

You must be at least 18 years old. The new vehicle or trailer must be of the same type and have the same number of wheels as the previous one.
