Claudette Colvin was an African American teenager who, in 1955, was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white person. Her brave action came nine months before Rosa Parks also refused to give up her seat. It was Parks's action that sparked the U.S. civil rights movement.

Claudette refuses to leave her seat on the bus, after she was let out of school early. After a few refusals of getting out of her seat, the bus driver calls in an officer that does not have the authority to arrest people.

On March 2, 1955, Claudette Colvin, age 15, was arrested for resisting bus racial segregation in Montgomery, Alabama. Colvin was one of five plaintiffs in the first federal court case filed by civil rights attorney Fred Gray on February 1, 1956, as Browder v. Gayle, to challenge bus segregation in the city.

The main theme addressed in Claudette Colvin Twice Toward Justice was determination to overcome obstacles because people of all ages made sacrifices to participate in the boycott and African American used determination in unity.

Claudette Colvin: Twice toward Justice is the story of the early life of Claudette Colvin, a fifteen-year-old resident of Montgomery in 1955 who spontaneously refused to yield her seat to a white woman, which violated local law at the time.
