Traditional theory of Islamic jurisprudence recognizes four sources of Sharia: the Quran, sunnah (authentic hadith), qiyas (analogical reasoning), and ijma (juridical consensus).

Illegitimate child is not entitled to inherit property under Shia law whereas under Sunni Law illegitimate child is entitled to inherit property from mother. There is another noteworthy distinction that Shia law does not recognize distant kindred as another category of legal heirs as they are identified in Sunni law.
