Tennessee Final Order of Adoption

Finalization of adoption usually takes place between three months and a year after the child comes home. An adoption cannot be finalized until the birth parents' revocation period (ranging from hours to months) has expired and the family's social worker has completed at least one post-placement visit.

Parties who can reverse an adoption usually include the birth parents, adoptive parents and the child being adopted. In order for an adoption to be reversed, a petition must usually be filed by one of these parties and the court must be convinced of a compelling reason to reverse or annul the adoption.

Once made, an adoption order cannot be undone except in an extremely limited set of circumstances. It is possible to appeal an order before it is put into practice, but that is different to revoking an order that has been implemented.

After your adoption finalization is complete, your adoption attorney will help you apply for a new birth certificate and social security card. At this point, your legal adoption process will be complete but your lifelong adoption journey is just beginning.

A parent can voluntarily place a child into foster care or voluntarily surrender his/her parental rights so that the child can be adopted by another person, but there is no such thing as un-adopting a child.

You will be sworn in before the judge. Your attorney or the judge will ask you to introduce yourself and the child. The judge may ask a few questions before signing the final adoption decree, granting you permanent legal custody of your child.

You may be able to obtain a copy of the adoption record that is maintained by the superior court by filing a petition, under California Family Code 9200, in the clerk's office of the county superior court where the adoption was finalized.

For independent adoptions, you have 30 calendar days after signing the consent to change your mind. However, if you signed a Waiver of the Right to Revoke Consent in front of a judge, your consent is immediately irrevocable, and you cannot change your mind.
