The job of the mediator is not to judge at all. The mediator's job is to stay curious and leave decision-making to the parties themselves, based on their own standards. Results are individual, spontaneous, and sometimes quite unpredictable. So mediators and judges direct conversations differently.

The mediator assists and guides the parties toward their own resolution. The mediator does not decide the outcome, but helps the parties understand and focus on the important issues needed to reach a resolution.

Novice mediators earn an average of £1,350.00 per day, whilst experienced mediators earn an average of A£3,640.00 per day.

To become an accredited family mediator, you first need to attend an FMC approved foundation training course. After this, you can register with the FMC as working towards accreditation, and then start work to build up a portfolio of evidence that you meet the competencies outlined in the FMC standards framework.

Being a professional mediator is all about conflict resolution, and so the job demands a person with excellent reasoning, problem-solving, and peace-making abilities.A good mediator is honest, neutral, and encouraging; listens well; and has excellent communication skills.

The mediator's role is to guide parties through a dispute to reach a favorable agreement. Mediators do not judge who is right or wrong in a dispute, nor do they provide legal advice; rather, they facilitate communication between parties that might otherwise have a difficult time exploring the problem themselves.

To be accepted for family mediation training, you will normally need a higher education qualification or substantial relevant work experience. As part of the selection process, you will need to show that you have the right personal qualities and skills to be a family mediator.
