Research shows that in a city of 100,000, each new nonprofit community organization lead to a 1.2 percent drop in the homicide rate, a 1 percent reduction in the violent crime rate, and a 0.7 percent reduction in the property crime rate.

Community resolutions do not constitute a criminal record and are not currently recorded on the Police National Computer. They are however recorded on police information systems and can be accessed for intelligence purposes.

Generally, you have the option of buying out your community service hours unless the Court specifically prohibited it at the time of sentencing. Talk to your probation officer about the buy-out. If he/she will not permit it, set your case for hearing and ask the Court to authorize it in your present circumstance.

Walk kids home from school. Rake leaves for an elderly neighbor. Mow your neighbor's lawn. Offer dog-walking services. If you know another language, be a translator at parent-teacher conferences. Babysit during PTA meetings. Foster a shelter animal.

Community service provides an opportunity for the offender to see first-hand the indirect injuries caused by his/her offence. In this way, the offender may see the reasons for the limits of social tolerance.The emphasis of community service is not on punishment nor on rehabilitation; rather, it is on accountability.

Ministry of Justice research, comparing similar offenders and similar offences, shows that community sentences are now outperforming short prison sentences and are 8.3 % more effective in reducing re-offending rates.

Some common community service examples include: Working with schoolchildren: Tutoring children after school, collecting school supplies to donate, planting a school garden. Working with senior citizens: Visiting residents of a retirement center, delivering meals to senior citizens, driving them to appointments.
