The basins are the Atlantic Seaboard basin, the Gulf of Mexico basin, the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence basin, the Pacific basin, the Arctic basin, the Hudson Bay basin, and the Great Basin.

The Missouri River Basin is comprised of seven major subbasins and drains about 34,000 square miles or about 48 percent of the State's total area.These free-flowing river miles are located in the reach just below Garrison Dam and upstream from Lake Oahe (formed by a Oahe Dam located in South Dakota).

The largest watershed in the United States is the Mississippi River Watershed, which drains 1.15 million square miles from all or parts of 31 U.S. states and two Canadian provinces stretching from the Rockies to the Appalachians!

Between 1909 and 1928, the district had constructed nearly 1,000 miles of ditches and 300 miles of levees to drain 1.2 million acres of overflowed and swamp land in southeast Missouri.

The inclusion of the "bootheel" in the boundaries of Missouri has been credited to John Hardeman Walker, a landowner and influential citizen of southeast Missouri.Walker and the people of Little Prairie realized this line would place their lands some twenty-five miles south of the Missouri border.

From Sioux City to St Louis, the Missouri River is channeled out so those 734 miles will have no problem handling a boat no matter what the size. That section of the river is often used for barges transporting items from Nebraska/Iowa to St Louis as well points in between.
