In common law systems, a superior court is a court of general competence which typically has unlimited jurisdiction with regard to civil and criminal legal cases.A superior court may hear appeals from lower courts (see court of appeal). The highest of the superior courts is the Supreme court.

The District Court handles misdemeanors where the maximum sentence is 2 ½ years in the House of Corrections. The Superior Court has authority over all crimes and most often handles major felony cases.

Individuals are guaranteed the right to represent themselves in court by the Georgia Constitution. This privilege does not extend to corporations, who must be represented in the courts by an attorney admitted to the Georgia State Bar.

An individual can represent himself in court. Unlike an individual, however, a corporation can only be represented by an attorney. It cannot represent itself through an officer, director, or employee of the corporation who is not an attorney.

The default may be opened as a matter of right by the filing of such defenses within 15 days of the day of default, upon the payment of costs.
