Tagging, tallying, and keeping track of elements: that's what it's all about. A script breakdown is the preproduction step that helps identify all the elements in a scene so they can be prepped prior to production and included in the shooting schedule, call sheets and various other script breakdown sheets reports.

Armed with a scene-by-scene breakdown, I can do the following: Look for plotline points which turn the narrative in new directions. Identify sequences, a set of scenes with its on Beginning-Middle-End. Zero in on subplots, key character relationships. Track character arcs, particularly the Protagonist's metamorphosis.

As you read the scene and notice a prop, simply highlight the word. Once highlighted, click the word and a pop up tool box will emerge. Here you can select the category under which this word will be tagged. For our script breakdown, we'll mark ?rifles? as a prop.

This is when you annotate the script and start the basic breakdown of the action. Divide lines between the scenes to separate them. Use a highlighter to pick out the different characters and crowds who need costumes. Underscore all action that relates to the costumes.

The formatting for your breakdown sheet should include the following for each scene: The scene heading (e.g., ?INT. RESTAURANT - DAY?) The scene number. Page length of the scene written in eighths (eg., "? pgs" or "3? pgs") Every production element you tagged in the script, organized into the element's specific category.

Pauses and Silence Any pause in speech longer than 10 seconds is indicated with [pause], which can appear mid-sentence or at the beginning of a sentence. Short pauses (3 to 10 seconds) are indicated using ellipses.

A script breakdown is an important filmmaking process that allows you to identify all the script elements needed to prep, schedule, and budget a film production. A breakdown happens at a scene level.
