Change the header and footer marginClick VIEW > Ruler. Double-click the header or footer area. Press CTRL+A. On the ruler, drag the right indent marker.

Using sections, you can have a different header on each page of your document or on different groups of pages. When you want a different header on a page, go to the Breaks menu on the Page Layout tab and select Next Page. With the cursor in the new section, activate the page header and add content.

To "remove" the header/footer area, click in the header and select "Options." Change the header/footer margin to 0 (zero) inches from the top/bottom. Next, change the top/bottom margin of your document to zero as well via File > Page setup > Margins.

Just put your cursor in the header, then adjust the margin sliders in the ruler. Click in the text area and you'll see the that those margins are unaffected by the change.
